The “Eco Go Beyond” Project for Sustainable Education in Sri Lanka

Summary

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and MAS Holdings, a South Asian apparel company, have jointly recognized an opportunity to expand, replicate and showcase their existing sustainability education initiative “Eco Go Beyond” in Sri Lanka, a project which was implemented between 2006 and 2008.

The Eco Go Beyond project is a strategic CSR initiative of MAS Holdings and commenced in August 2006 with a flagship initiative focusing on a sustainable development education project. The project aimed at introducing this concept and creating understanding of applicability to youth as tomorrow’s leaders. With this new initiative, tomorrow’s leaders are empowered with the requisite skills and knowledge to build a better and more sustainable tomorrow.

The core objective of this initiative, which is implemented in partnership with the Sri Lankan ministry of education, is the provision of sustainable development education to 30 selected schools in predominantly rural locations in Sri Lanka where MAS apparel manufacturing units are located. Its main thrust is to create and raise awareness on the concept and practice of sustainable development and to provide an opportunity for the implementation of the knowledge gained.
