Summary
The video shows highlights from the UN Web4Dev conference which was hosted by UNICEF for the first time in 2009. Issues of the appropriateness of technology for the developing world, including technological hardware, were extensively reviewed and existing and new partners took part in the debates.
The outcome of the 2009 ‘Web4Dev’ conference, was the development of a roadmap for future collaboration to put technology in the service of global development. The conference paid particular attention to the need to match technologies to the needs and capabilities of the developing world and not to assume that developed technologies would necessarily fit those needs. Existing collaborators and participants included Intel’s Emerging Markets Development Group and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa. At the same time, a new partnership was announced by the CEO of Grameen Solutions of Bangladesh to increase innovation opportunity through education with mobile phones.
