Presentation: Growing inclusive markets - How businesses’ quest for new markets, innovations & opportunity can leverage the global human development agenda

Summary

A vibrant Private Sector is a key component in combating poverty and a potentially significant partner in meeting other MDG.

The Private Sector can contribute to Human Development and Peace but barriers to Private Sector Development remains significant in most developing countries. While Philanthropy and CSR are welcome and sometimes successful contributions, evidence is emerging that core business assets need to be deployed in order to achieve core business objectives while including the poor.

The Growing Inclusive Markets Initiative

  • Conceived in 2006 following the success of Unleashing Entrepreneurship: Making Business Work for the Poor.
  • Offers a platform for collaboration and already gathers over 20 key stakeholders including business associations, academic institutions and development agencies.
  • Seeks to gather information on low-income markets, disseminate knowledge and inspire action.
  • Focuses on core business activities, Southern perspective and country-level replication.
