Dear Focal Point,
Welcome to the 19th issue of the UN-Business Focal Point newsletter!
First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you who attended and contributed to the success of the UN Private Sector Focal Points meeting in Geneva back in April 2013. It was a great pleasure to see everyone together, including the representatives from the Global Compact Local Networks. It was very inspiring to listen to and take part in the various discussions on how to engage in and strengthen local partnerships between the United Nations and business.
In addition, I would like to inform you of a few interesting outcomes the Global Compact Leaders Summit which took place from 19-20 September 2013 in New York. First, CEOs endorsed a new “architecture for business engagement” – unveiled by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon – which aims to drive and scale up corporate actions to directly advance United Nations goals by linking business engagement with global priorities. Second, three new issue platforms for business support of education, agriculture, and peace were launched which complement existing UN Global Compact platforms on children’s rights, women’s empowerment, climate and energy, water, and anti-corruption.
In this issue of the UN-Business Focal Point newsletter, there are a number of articles which may be of interest to you. First, the special thematic focus section of this issue focuses on the Post-MDG process and contributions by various UN agencies, including the UN Global Compact and UNDP. Second, this issue presents a number of interesting new partnerships, thematic articles on topics of interest, an interview with UNISDR Focal Point Kiki Rebecca Lawal, as well as some new tools which may be helpful to your work, including the new UN-Business Partnership Handbook developed by the UN Global Compact Office and the Global Public Policy Institute.
On behalf of the UN Global Compact Office, I thank you for taking the time to contribute articles to this issue. We encourage you to contact us with your new partnerships, tools, events and ideas. We hope you enjoy this issue!
