WFP continues to engage the private sector to support the Walk the World event. This annual event raises money to support the school feeding programme. A variety of organisations exist that continue to support the annual Walk the World event such as the transport sector, banking sector and communications sector.
In 2008, 64 private sector organisations donated in support of the event. Some of the major donors included National Bank, Sunbird Hotels, Rice Milling Company, Rab Processors and Celtel Malawi. Preliminary figures indicate that the Malawi private sector and the community at large contributed US$31,000, enough to feed over 3,100 primary school children in Malawi for one year. The Walk the World event serves as a valuable platform with which to inform the private sector and general public of issues surrounding child hunger and WFP activities.
