In June 2008, responding to an urgent appeal by the UN Global Compact Office, French reinsurer SCOR Group donated USD 200,000 to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support relief efforts following the devastating natural disasters in China and Myanmar.
“We are very pleased that our call to action has resonated so well”, said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “While philanthropy is not at the center of our work, it is an important component of responsible corporate citizenship, especially in times of crisis.”.
He went on to stress the key role of CERF as the United Nations’ primary vehicle for private sector contributions to emergency relief. “By contributing to CERF, companies are not only contributing to much-needed relief efforts”, he said. “They also strengthen the UN’s capacity to serve as an effective coordinator of humanitarian efforts.”
Launched in March 2006, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is a stand-by fund established by the United Nations to enable more timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts. Since its inception CERF has committed over USD 844 million to humanitarian projects in 62 countries. For more information and to make a donation, visit http://cerf.un.org.
