UNEP and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) partner on sustainability reporting

Summary

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has long encouraged voluntary environmental reporting by companies around the world.

As a continuation of the work of UNEP in encouraging environmental reporting, a global set of guidelines for reporting on both environmental and social impact were launched in March 1999, and over 20 corporations from around the world agreed to serve as pilot tests.

The sustainability reporting project continued with a development group in 2003-2004 which created environmental performance indicators for the financial sector, released in March 2005. In 2006-2008 a financial pilot group was formed from 11 financial institutions and 8 stakeholder groups was formed, representing a range of different regions and experience. Over the two year period the group tested and reviewed the draft versions of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Financial Services Sector Supplement.
