UNIDO and Microsoft: Provision of refurbished PCs to SMEs in underserved communities

Harnessing information and communication technologies (ICT) to promote sustainable industrialisation in developing countries has been the fundamental goal of the various cooperation programmes jointly established by UNIDO and Microsoft since 2006, with a special focus on the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector.

Of particular relevance is the Green Industry Initiative, aimed to promote industrial development in an economical, environmental and socially sustainable manner. It encompasses the Computer Refurbishment Programme, launched in 2008, which offers affordable, safe and much-needed computers to SMEs and consumers at the bottom of the economic pyramid in sub-Sahara Africa, in a safe and sustainable way.
