Overview
The UNISDR aims at building disaster resilient communities by promoting increased awareness of the importance of disaster reduction as an integral component of sustainable development, with the goal of reducing human, social, economic and environmental losses due to natural hazards and related technological and environmental disasters.
Opportunities include disaster risk reduction efforts driven by long-term, integrated and multi-faceted partnerships which include both traditional and innovative approaches, such as:
• risk assessment and research
• policy and legislative advocacy and guidance
• knowledge management and transfer
• promoting corporate responsibility
• innovations and coordinated program solutions for communities
• strategic philanthropy through cash and in-kind contributions
• training and capacity strengthening
• networking, events and sponsorship
• cause-marketing initiatives
UNISDR seeks partnerships with businesses wanting to take the lead in ensuring the safety of long-term investments by: improving commercial risk analysis in a changing climate; refining and developing risk transfer options for disaster prone communities and industries; planning ahead to protect industry and society from disasters, preventing economic disruption, and assuring business continuity; investing more in human, technical and financial resources to build the resilience of nations and communities; partnering with communities, local and national governments, and international entities to save lives and livelihoods; prevention and mitigation of disaster risk to public utilities and infrastructure. They will achieve this through core business arrangements, philanthropy and corporate social responsibility.
