UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research)

UNITAR profile

  • Overview

Founded in 1965, UNITAR is the leading UN Institute offering cutting-edge training on global and strategic challenges. As an autonomous body within the UN system, UNITAR is led by an Executive Director, governed by a Board of Trustees and is supported by voluntary contributions from governments, intergovernmental organizations, foundations and the private sector.

With 80’000 beneficiaries in 2008-2009, the Institute is providing short executive training to national and local government officials of UN Member States and civil society representatives around the world. As a centre of excellence for knowledge transfer, measured by international standards, UNITAR strives to respond to the growing demand, especially from the least developed countries, for capacity development in the fields of Environment; Peace, Security and Diplomacy; and Governance. The work of the Institute benefits a large range of partners and the entire UN system in its drive towards a more integrated and efficient delivery framework.
