WSSCC (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council)

WSSCC profile

  • Overview

WSSCC’s mission is to accelerate the achievement of sustainable sanitation, hygiene and water services for all people. WSSCC developed and continues to promote the global WASH campaign (water, sanitation and hygiene).

There are 2.6 billion people without safe sanitation and the 884 million people without clean drinking water. Clearly there is much work to be done. WSSCC enhances collaboration among organisations and professionals to accelerate progress. It is a global multi-stakeholder partnership and membership organisation that carries out networking, knowledge sharing, advocacy and communications and makes grants to sanitation and hygiene programmes in developing countries via its Global Sanitation Fund. WSSCC has coalitions in 35 countries, individual members in more than 160 countries, and a Geneva-based Secretariat hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The number of people without sanitation is much greater than the number without water, while the agencies working in sanitation are fewer; therefore in 2007 WSSCC made a strategic decision to dedicate the vast majority of its effort to sanitation and hygiene.

    Preferences in private sector partnership

Collaboration is WSSCC’s middle name. It is a unique partnership and membership organisation hosted within the UN. It brings together a wide range of stakeholders nationally, regionally and globally to solve the large sanitation problem. WSSCC promotes people-centred, demand-led approaches that focus on increasing people’s demand for sanitation. We need businesses ready to meet this demand.

WSSCC is keen to engage with private sector partners in the business of sanitation. On the one hand, we are looking for partners to support our work particularly the Global Sanitation Fund and advocacy and awareness raising campaigns including cause-related marketing. On the other hand, we are looking for collaborative partners to find ways to develop markets and small business entrepreneurs, assisting them to access capital. With the UN and public sector focusing efforts on demand creation and hygiene behaviour, we need a range of partners to ensure the supply of services. We are looking for partners to engage in market research and solution-oriented investigations to transform sanitation into a vibrant everyday area of human economic activity. Think fertilizer, carbon credits, low cost toilet components, other suggestions? We would like to work with you.

WSSCC is particularly looking to partner with global sanitation and hygiene companies and for organisations to support the Global Sanitation Fund. WSSCC does not provide sanitation and water in emergencies, rather we share knowledge on WASH in emergencies and focus our major efforts on long term sustainable sanitation services as part of ongoing development.
