Launched in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a global membership network of companies, governments, and development organizations working to identify and promote business models that contribute to long-term commercial and development goals. By challenging companies to adapt business models and apply core competencies in innovative ways, the BCtA aims to stimulate pro-poor growth and accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
Supported by the UK Department for International Development, the Australian Agency for International Development, the UN Development Programme, the UN Global Compact, the Clinton Global Initiative, and the International Business Leaders Forum, the BCtA’s value-added stems from its ability to provide:
A global leadership platform and opportunities to share expertise, knowledge, and best practices for market-based approaches to development;
Business development assistance; and
Linkages with companies, donors, and other key stakeholders.
Worldwide, companies have responded to the BCtA by making commitments to improve the lives and livelihoods of millions through commercially-viable business ventures that engage low-income people as consumers, producers, suppliers, and distributors of goods and services. To date, BCtA company initiatives have had a dramatic and measurable impact on emerging economies by creating some 100,000 jobs and opportunities, providing banking services to 11 million people, promoting affordable healthcare for 82,000 women, extending access to mobile phone service to 400,000 people, and empowering more than 1 million farmers with access agricultural advice and information.
