UNEP-SBCI promotes policies and practices for a sustainably built environment. The building sector has the largest potential of any sector to reduce emissions at low-costs using readily available technologies while creating millions of quality jobs. Companies in the building and construction sector can help support the international agenda to reach reduction targets and participate in programmes to support national emissions reductions.
UNEP-SBCI develops tools for improvements in performance and reaches out to developing country stakeholders to enhance sustainability worldwide. UNEP-SBCI is looking for partners interested in supporting regional reports for South Africa, Mexico and India, on GHG Emission Baselines and Reduction Potentials of the Building Sector. These reports provide concrete assessments of the climate mitigation potential of the sector guiding appropriate policy interventions.
UNEP-SBCI is also looking to collaborate with companies interested in formulating a common language to establish consistent global methods to measure and report building performance through development of a Sustainable Buildings Index. This work will be guided by a newly forming Steering Committee and Technical Advisory Committees on metrics such as energy/GHG, water/waste, materials, biodiversity, etc. The initiative is also seeking corporate partners in the “Pilot of the Common Carbon Metric”, the first globally applicable metric allowing consistent measurement of energy use and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for the building sector. The Pilot will demonstrate how to establish baseline performance for building types in climate regions and set climate change mitigation reduction targets.
