Enel supports the United Nations with the Enabling Electricity program in order to promote access to electricity.Project objectives
Project Action Areas: Improve/access to modern energy sources, Increase access to modern cooking appliances and fuels (i.e. LPG), Increase energy supply/distribution/use efficiency, Produce/create financing solutions.
This program is based on commercially-viable initiatives, strictly connected to the company’s core business and activities, which reflect also populations needs and provide them with valid solutions in response to their bare necessities.
Starting from the already existing Enel best practices, an internal consultation has been developed in order to incentivize new initiatives in this field, which is considered a strategic driver of the Sustainability Plan. Some projects have been developed in collaboration with local and national governments, business partners, local or global NGOs or UN agencies, such as the Barefoot College and the World Food Program.Beneficiaries
1) People who live in isolated areas, scarcely or not connected to the electricity grid
2) Disadvantaged communities in peripheral, rural and suburban areas
Already, over one million people worldwide benefit from the Group’s innovative projects to favour access to energy. With Enabling Electricity, Enel intends to double these numbers by 2014. Beyond this target year Enel will continue to invest in this program, which will continuously evolve and incentivize new initiatives.Project URL
