Energy Independence 2020

Energy Independence 2020

  • Overview

    Vision / description

We want to have a positive impact on people and the planet, which is why we have decided to become energy independent – producing more renewable energy than we consume by 2020 and becoming 20% more energy efficient in our operations by 2015.

    Project objectives

Through our Suppliers Go Renewable programme we are also helping our suppliers to become 20% more energy efficient by 2017 and to use more renewable energy.

Our investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy benefit people and the planet by helping to increase the supply of renewable energy and to reduce carbon emissions. Investing in our own supply of clean energy also has business benefits as predictable energy costs, combined with ever-greater energy efficiency, help us cut costs and continue to offer customers with quality products at affordable prices. Our People and Planet Positive sustainability strategy, which includes our renewable energy commitments, sets out actions that will be delivered before 2020.

    Current progress

We have already made great progress towards becoming energy independent and we now produce energy from wind, solar and biomass equivalent to a third of our total energy use. We are taking action to become more energy efficient, for example by converting all of the lighting in our buildings to more efficient solutions, mainly LED. We have over 300,000 solar panels on the roofs of our stores and distribution centres and we have committed to own and operate 137 wind turbines. To get us even closer to our goal of 100% renewable energy, we have committed EUR 1.5 billion to invest in renewable energy up until 2015. We are investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy across our global operations. We are also supporting our suppliers around the world to do the same.
