Engaging Citizens and Business In Lowering Carbon Emissions

Engaging Citizens and Business In Lowering Carbon Emissions

  • Overview

    Vision / description

Our proposal with the CarbonGobbler is to address and empower citizens/employees to understand their energy use, in comparison with other homes and businesses in the state and with National Averages as well. The motto is – What you cannot measure you cannot improve! The CarbonGobbler is available for Mobile users and helps users monitor and account for carbon emission from transportation choices.

    Project objectives

We promote the 1 kWh Advantage. This short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDXQOeswLIA) of 3.38 minutes, explains the concept. This can be well suited for citizen engagement as well.

Here is something to think about:
A 2000 member group, has the potential to save 1- metric ton of carbon emissions if they just save 1 kWh A DAY! A typical Fortune 500 Company has about 25000 employees, that is 12.6 MT of emissions saved per day with the same formulae. In a year, 4562+ MT of emissions saved. Concerning Walmart, with over a million employees, their potential is almost 180,000 MT of carbon emissions a year. With a rewards and awards program, this could be further scaled up and represents sustainable action.

    The US Scenario:
Given that average US household emissions are roughly 48 MT of emission per year, the CarbonGobbler can create a dent in those numbers — http://coolclimate.berkeley.edu/footprint
A small business employee with an average of 5 employees (typical size of the small business ) has a footprint of roughly 350 MT per annum http://coolclimate.berkeley.edu/business-calculator (per California)
A typical 65 Gallons of fuel per month consumed by household vehicles equals roughly 8 MT of emissions (note: this is included in the overall 48 MT of household emissions: http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/ind-assumptions.html

With the tools like the CarbonGobbler, we believe awareness will fuel action. Concerning energy use at home, we could aim for a minimum of 10% and a maximum of 20% saving per annum. Likewise, for business as well. Regarding transportation choices, we believe a 10% reduction at the minimum should be possible, leading to major energy savings.
