Mapping People’s Colombo: Understanding the Potential for Sustainable Urban Development

  • Overview

    Project objectives

    The larger project aims,

    1. To achieve a multilayered understanding of self-built neighborhoods as places that made the city livable for the community and as a part of larger City (Colombo).
    2. To develop (and document) a methodology to understand the informal space dynamics in Colombo
    3. To develop a transferable version of knowledge on the methodology developed which is legible to a range of users including creators of the place (community), urban planning practitioners/ students/academics, policy makers, NGOs and civil society.

We intend to start this research with a six-month long pilot study that investigates one neighborhood in its full complexity; the pilot study aims to experiment with the methodology and the form of outcome. This pilot study of the ‘Wekanda’ neighborhood will help us understand the value/potential of such research to enhance the knowledge and policy frameworks on sustainable urban and human development.
