Provide Water Wells in Refugee Settlements in Northern Uganda

Provide Water Wells in Refugee Settlements in Northern Uganda

  • Overview

    Vision / description

Los Angeles-based NGO Drop in the Bucket is a leader in implementing sustainable well projects in Uganda and South Sudan. DROP’s main activities include constructing water and sanitation facilities at schools thus enabling children, especially girls, to receive an education and realize their full potential. DROP drills borehole wells and constructs toilets. Drop in the Bucket is supported by CBT Nuggets via our NuggetLove philanthropic program. CBT Nuggets provides support in proposal development and fundraising consultation.

Drop in the Bucket views long-term sustainability as the ultimate measure of project success and works to empower communities to own and manage their school WASH facilities. In order to do this, Drop in the Bucket collaborates closely with the Ministries of Education and Infrastructure at the state and county level, as well as with community members, school management committees, local leaders, and school administrators. Drop in the Bucket’s sustainable water interventions are supported by the creation of Village Savings Groups to empower beneficiaries toward economic self-dependancy. Drop in the Bucket’s Sanitation programs promote gender equality, education, human dignity, and empowerment.

This project seeks to drill wells and provide sustainability and community development interventions in refugee settlements in northern Uganda. We are currently seeking partners to fund wells in the Lamwo district of Uganda. Our target in 2018 is to provide water and sanitation to 100 schools across Uganda, as well as to serve as many refugee settlements as possible with lifesaving water projects.

    Project objectives

Drop in the Bucket has already partnered with UNHCR in the Palabek Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda. We would like to expand the potential of working in other refugee settlements, as well as in surrounding communities. We would like to partner with the members of UN Water to ease implementation of projects, gain access to the UN Global Compact members, and other businesses looking for partners on the UN Business Hub to help to fund Drop in the Bucket’s water and sanitation programs. We believe that the resources of UN Water can help Drop in the Bucket to gain access to partnerships that will improve efficiency and speed of delivery of water in areas that need it most.

    Current progress

DROP has its own drilling equipment and successfully completed over 350 school water/sanitation projects in Uganda and South Sudan.
