Support the Transformation of Affordable Private Schools in Nigeria

Support the Transformation of Affordable Private Schools in Nigeria

  • Overview

    Vision / description

SEED aims to facilitate a more enabling environment for affordable private schools and a more effective market for them to offer increased standards and quality of education while they remain profitable and sustainable as a business. We are supporting the growth, success, and sustainability of these schools by being a catalyst for their transformation. The overall aim is to tackle youth unemployment and end the cycle of poverty through excellence in standards and quality of education and setting up of school & student enterprises to teach entrepreneurial skills and generate more income for these schools.

    Project objectives

    Partnership Areas

Standards and Quality of Education: The project is developing a tool called SQAT (SEED Quality Assessment Tool). SQAT, with a tagline of “…your path to education excellence”, is a quality improvement tool informed by global best practices and fit for purpose for the local market. It is being developed and tested to enable affordable private schools to assess their level of quality according to the 6 drivers in our framework. Technical Assistance is still required for developing and evaluating the tool. In addition, we are seeking funding and technical assistance support in converting this tool (currently on Microsoft Excel) to a web-based technology tool to enable our scale-up plan.

Advocacy: Throughout the course of this project, we would provide resources, facilitate activities, events (dialogues) that demonstrate to the government that the private sector can help educate poor children in an efficient way. We intend to conduct research on this project, using Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) to evaluate the impact of this intervention on the schools so as to develop a policy paper for advocacy with the government. This element of the research requires technical assistance and funding. We also intend to also develop research around gender involvement, as well as women participation in leadership and management of affordable private school segments.

Entrepreneurial Opportunities: We would be introducing to those interested in participating in affordable private schools that are willing to pilot entrepreneurial opportunities for the school (school businesses) and for children (Future4Kids Africa clubs). This can be seen as bringing business opportunities to low-income communities. We would be looking for technical assistance and funding for curriculum development, lesson plans, and implementation.

School Transformation Challenge: We created the School Transformation Challenge to recognize the schools that have maximised the training and continuing support framework to achieve significant transformation for their school as measured using SQAT. The Challenge would be concluded in August 2018 and the winning schools would receive their awards during the SEED Education for All Conference planned for September 2018. For this, we also require project funding, technical assistance, and support with prizes for the school.
